It explains concepts thoroughly, anticipates questions, and avoids conflict. On paper, it seems ideal. But as AI systems like ChatGPT evolve, a curious side effect has begun to emerge—what some are calling the “goblin problem.”
The “goblin problem” isn’t about malicious AI or dystopian rebellion. Instead, it refers to the unintended quirks, over-explanations, and occasionally odd behaviors that arise when AI is trained to be excessively informative and cautious. Like a well-meaning but overly enthusiastic student, the AI sometimes delivers answers that are technically correct yet socially awkward, overly verbose, or misaligned with what the user actually wants.
At the heart of this issue is alignment. AI systems are trained on vast datasets and fine-tuned with human feedback to be helpful, harmless, and honest. However, defining “helpful” is more complex than it seems. In many cases, the safest path for an AI is to provide more information rather than less. This leads to answers that are long-winded, filled with caveats, and sometimes unnecessarily technical—even when the user is looking for something simple.
For example, if a user asks a straightforward question like “Is it okay to drink coffee at night?”, a “nerdy” AI might respond with a mini-essay on caffeine metabolism, sleep cycles, individual tolerance levels, and potential health effects. Interestingly, the goblin problem highlights a deeper challenge in AI design: balancing intelligence with intuition. Being knowledgeable is not the same as being wise. Teaching AI this balance is far more difficult than training it on data.
So why does this happen? One reason is that training data often rewards completeness and correctness. Another is that human feedback tends to favor safe, inoffensive responses. Over time, this shapes the AI into a system that errs on the side of caution and thoroughness. While this reduces risk, it also introduces friction in everyday interactions.
The solution isn’t to make AI less intelligent, but to make it more adaptable. Future models need to better understand user intent, context, and preference. If a user asks for a quick answer, the AI should recognize that and respond concisely. If they want depth, it should be ready to dive in. This requires more nuanced training, better context awareness, and possibly user-controlled response styles.
Another promising direction is personalization. Not every user wants the same type of interaction. Some prefer detailed explanations, while others value brevity. Allowing users to adjust the AI’s tone and depth could help mitigate the goblin problem and create a more satisfying experience.
Ultimately, the goblin problem is not a failure—it’s a growing pain. It reflects the complexity of building systems that can navigate both knowledge and human interaction.
