Virat Kohli Rewrites the Record Books Again, Becomes First Player Ever to Cross 1,200 T20 Runs Against a Single Opponent

Virat Kohli has added another record to a career that already has plenty. In the IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday, May 17, Kohli made a fine 58 off 37 balls for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The innings made him the first player in world cricket to pass 1,200 runs against a single opponent in T20s. 

A record that broke his own record

The milestone was not new territory for Kohli. Before the match he already held the record for the most runs against a single team in the IPL, so he ended up breaking his own world record. Kohli's total against Punjab Kings now stands at 1,217. Behind it come his own 1,174 against Chennai Super Kings and 1,172 against Delhi Capitals, followed by Rohit Sharma's 1,161 against Kolkata Knight Riders and David Warner's 1,134 against Punjab Kings. 

The list shows how far ahead he is. Three of the top six totals belong to Kohli, and another sits at 1,126 against KKR. No other batter has scored this heavily against one franchise, and it points to a rare consistency: he keeps finding new ways to score against attacks he has faced dozens of times.

Records within the record

The 1,200-run mark was not the only milestone of the afternoon. By crossing 500 runs for the season during the innings, Kohli registered his ninth IPL season with 500-plus runs, the most by any batter in tournament history, with David Warner and KL Rahul trailing on seven each. Scoring 500 runs in one IPL season is a strong effort on its own, and doing it nine times shows longevity as much as talent. 

His batting partnerships were also record-setting. Stands with Devdutt Padikkal and Venkatesh Iyer took his career tally to 210 fifty-plus partnerships in men's T20 cricket. That number shows a batter who builds an innings around his partners as much as around his own strokes. 

A season full of milestones

Dharamsala was the latest in a run of records this season. On April 27, Kohli became the first player in the world to reach 9,000 total runs in the IPL. A few weeks later, in the RCB–KKR game in Raipur on May 13, he became the first cricketer to score nine IPL hundreds. In that game he also became one of only three batters to score a century in at least five different IPL seasons. 

He was also honest about the pressure he puts on himself. After the Raipur match, Kohli said that missing out in the previous two games had bothered him, because his goal has always been to make an impact for his team. The remark helps explain why he is still setting records after so many years. 

Part of a much larger legacy

This IPL form is one chapter of a career full of firsts. Kohli was the first player to score 20,000 international runs in a decade, and he was named the ICC Cricketer of the Decade for 2011 to 2020. In 2018 he became the first player to win the ICC Cricketer of the Year, ODI Player of the Year and Test Player of the Year awards in the same year. At the 2023 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai, he scored his record 50th ODI century, going past Sachin Tendulkar's total of 49, which many had thought would stand for years.

Why it matters

Kohli is 37, an age when many batters are slowing down, yet he is still scoring heavily at the top of the order in the world's biggest T20 league. His record against Punjab Kings is more than a statistic. It shows a player who has kept his standards high across more than a decade and a half, and who still seems to enjoy breaking his own marks. With RCB in strong form this season, the record may not be the last one he sets before the tournament ends.
