Posts on X, YouTube, and WhatsApp forwards have warned that E20 can damage engines, reduce mileage, attract insects, contaminate fuel tanks, and even void vehicle insurance. Understandably, this has left millions of car and bike owners worried about what they're putting in their tanks every time they refuel.
In response to the growing panic, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stepped in with an official clarification. According to the ministry's statement, no widespread reports of engine failure or vehicle breakdown linked to ethanol blending have surfaced since E20 was rolled out. Officials described many of the viral claims doing the rounds as misleading or scientifically inaccurate, and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than forwarded messages.
One of the most common fears is that ethanol's tendency to absorb moisture could damage fuel systems or cause corrosion. The government doesn't deny this chemical property exists, but points out that fuel storage, distribution, and vehicle systems are all engineered with approved ethanol blends in mind meaning the moisture-absorbing nature of ethanol isn't inherently unsafe when standards are followed correctly.
Mileage is another sticking point for many motorists. Because ethanol carries slightly less energy than pure petrol, a small dip in fuel efficiency is possible, and the government has acknowledged this. However, officials are clear that this expected dip should not be mistaken for engine damage — the two are separate issues, and one doesn't necessarily lead to the other. How much mileage changes depends on the vehicle, engine tuning, driving style, and even traffic conditions, so the experience can vary widely from one owner to the next.
The insurance rumor — that claims could be denied if a car develops issues after using E20 — has also been addressed. This particular claim, along with suggestions that ethanol is mixed in through sugarcane rather than proper industrial processing, has been called baseless. Ethanol used in blending goes through fermentation and distillation before it's added to petrol, following set fuel standards.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has also weighed in directly on the controversy. He stated that his ministry hasn't received a single verified complaint proving that ethanol-blended petrol has caused vehicle damage. For owners who do notice a drop in performance or mileage, his advice is straightforward: get the vehicle inspected at an authorized dealership first, and if a genuine fault is found, file a complaint with the manufacturer as well as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
That said, the picture isn't entirely without nuance. The bigger compatibility concern lies with older vehicles those manufactured before April 2023 which were largely built for a 10% ethanol blend (E10). Running these models on higher blends like E20 over time can, in some cases, affect fuel system components, and reports of reduced mileage in older cars have not been entirely dismissed. Automakers only began building fully E20-compatible vehicles from 2023 onward, with completely compliant models arriving in 2025.
So, is E20 safe? For most modern vehicles, the government's position is a firm yes with routine maintenance and normal use. For older cars, the picture is a little more mixed, and owners experiencing noticeable issues are encouraged to get them checked rather than relying on social media claims. As India continues its push toward higher ethanol blending with E27 already under discussion this is likely a conversation that will keep evolving alongside the country's clean-energy goals.
