India’s SUV market soared in September 2025, with Tata Motors, Hyundai Motor India, and Mahindra & Mahindra posting record monthly sales. Strong festive season demand, along with the rollout of GST 2.0 reforms, boosted retail momentum across segments, driving robust growth and setting the stage for a record-breaking quarter in the Indian auto industry.
SUVs stole the spotlight in September with unprecedented sales success
Tata Motors hits a new milestone as Nexon leads the way to record sales
Tata Motors achieved a historic milestone in September, recording its highest-ever monthly passenger vehicle (PV) sales at 60,907 units. Of these, 59,667 units were sold in the domestic market, reflecting an impressive 47% year-on-year growth. This outstanding performance underscores the company’s strong foothold in India’s automotive sector and highlights the increasing demand for SUVs across the country.
Driving this remarkable surge was the Tata Nexon, which set a new monthly record with 22,500 units sold, reaffirming its position as the brand’s best-selling model. The Nexon’s popularity continues to grow due to its diverse and versatile powertrain lineup, which includes petrol, diesel, and electric variants. This flexibility caters to a wide spectrum of consumer needs, from everyday city commutes to long-distance travel, while also appealing to the growing environmentally conscious segment seeking electric mobility solutions.
Competitive pricing and Tata Motors’ strong brand reputation have further strengthened the Nexon’s appeal, making it one of the most sought-after compact SUVs in India. Its combination of stylish design, advanced features, and reliable performance has resonated well with buyers, positioning the Nexon as a key driver of Tata Motors’ overall passenger vehicle sales.
As a cornerstone of the company’s PV portfolio, the Nexon plays a crucial role in consolidating Tata Motors’ leadership in the country’s rapidly expanding SUV market. With consumer preference shifting increasingly toward SUVs, Tata Motors’ focus on delivering innovative, high-quality, and versatile models like the Nexon ensures that the company remains well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand and maintain its competitive edge in India’s dynamic automotive landscape.
Mahindra’s Scorpio and SUV portfolio maintain their winning streak in the market

Mahindra continued its strong performance in September, recording total vehicle sales of 100,298 units—a 16% year-on-year increase—including exports. The SUV segment led the way with 56,233 domestic sales, up 10% from September last year, while combined UV sales, including exports, reached 58,714 units.
The iconic Scorpio series stood out with 18,372 units sold, reaffirming its popularity among Indian SUV buyers. In the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, Mahindra also reported robust domestic sales of 26,728 units, marking an 18% year-on-year growth.
The company noted minor dispatch challenges in the latter half of September due to limited trailer availability, which temporarily affected SUV billing. Despite this, Mahindra anticipates continued strong demand heading into the festive season.
Creta powers Hyundai to unprecedented SUV market reach

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) had a blockbuster September, achieving its highest-ever SUV contribution to total sales. The company sold 70,347 units, a 10% year-on-year increase over September 2024, with domestic sales of 51,547 units and exports soaring 44% YoY to 18,800 units—the highest in 33 months.
SUVs made up an impressive 72.4% of Hyundai’s total sales, marking a record for the company and reflecting India’s growing preference for SUVs. Leading the charge was the Hyundai Creta, which posted its best-ever monthly sales of 18,861 units, followed by the Venue at 11,484 units—its highest in 20 months. This performance underscores Hyundai’s strong presence in the compact and mid-size SUV segments, especially during the festive buying season.
